To the outsider the American political campaign process is a strange and alien show and dance. A ballet of pundit pagentry pandering, bitsize bantering bits, abnormal anamalistic antagonisism. Nowhere else does it like the 50 states do it, with every passing year seemingly to become a charachter of the previous cycle.

So fast does this serpentile circus move that more often then not the comedy and ironic mockery made of it ages out before it reaches saturation. SNL clips that age like milk, New Yorker comic strips meant to be absurdly fantastical become crystal balls, Gaffs that would sink anyone a decade ago becoming common place.

It was here in 2019 at the tail end of Trump’s first time in the whitehouse that I started to reflect on the world of the campaign. As normbreaking as his first campaign he had already started on his second up against aging Vice president Joe Biden.

“run fragmentation” was the title of the political paper I wrote about the nature of media in the American campaign. Tracing the exponential growth “unprecidation sitation” back to late 20th century origins. Bush Sr’s “Manniquin Handshake”, Clinton’s Saxophone Solo, The “Dean Scream”, “You Betcha” and “Hockey Mom” outreach of Palin to “Little Jeb” and “Lying Ted”. Drawing a throughline towards the policial climate leading into Trump’s second run.

Accompanying this work was a visual series, where high resolution imagery of candidates was disected and picked apart through extraction of insectional pieces that are then presented along the edges seperately, inquiring the viewer to project their own interpretation of seemingly innocuous things.

These were printed at Large scale with bright saturation and contrast and hung on walls for viewing alongside the requisite reading material. Unfortunately the research and paper written was lost in a incident involving migrating backups of my work. Today all that remains are these low resolution proofs of the visual side presented here.
